Gardening Frequently Asked Questions

Is it time to prune?

Timing is very thing when it comes to pruning.  It is important to know the growing habits of your plants to know when to prune them.  Ask your local garden center for assistance with specific plant pruning.

How is sub soil different from top soil?

Top soil gets its name from the natural layer of soil that form in our gardens.  Top soil is the first layer of soil and is found on top of what is know as sub soil.  Top Soil is darker in colour and richer in nutrients than sub soil.  Most plants feed from the top soil layer.  Where as larger plants use the sub soil to provide a strong anchor.  Sub soil also provides water for these larger plants..

What plants grows best on the Gold Coast?

It is very important to choose plants for your garden that are able to handle specific climates and environments.

Azaleas, camellias and most palms are best suited to the Gold Coast.  They can handle the harm conditions and at the same time they don't suffer from frost on those chilly Gold Coast winter mornings.

Conifers, on the other hand, are not very well suited to the Gold Coast as the climate is a bit too warm.

It's also important to note that planting along the extreme coastal strip will be a very different environment again and will require plants that are very winds and salt tolerant.
